In 2026, the "Invisible Bionic Ear" has become a reality. Unlike older models that required an external microphone and battery pack behind the ear, Fully Internalized Cochlear Implants (FICI) house all components—including the microphone and rechargeable battery—under the skin.

The internal microphone utilizes the ear's natural anatomy (the pinna) to collect sound, which preserves the user's ability to localize where a sound is coming from. These devices are charged wirelessly through a specialized "charging pillow" or headwear, allowing users to swim, sleep, and exercise without worrying about external hardware falling off or getting damaged.
